HSL is a Mac menu bar app from áddet (OMBORD OY). It shows Helsinki regional transit departures for routes you save. It does not create an account.
Independent companion for Helsinki regional transit. Not affiliated with HSL Helsinki Regional Transport.
Location
Location is optional. HSL asks macOS for location only when a trip uses Current location as the origin (or destination). Coordinates are used on this Mac to plan that journey. They are sent, as part of the routing request, to áddet’s proxy and then to Digitransit’s public Helsinki API so the planner can return options from where you are. They are not used for advertising, and áddet does not sell location data. You can plan trips with typed stops and addresses instead.
Turning off Current location stops location updates. Uninstalling the app removes its sandbox container; preferences may remain until you delete HSL’s container.
Search and journeys
When you search for a stop, address, or line, or refresh journeys, HSL
sends the search text and origin/destination coordinates to
https://api.addet.eu/hsl/v1/. That proxy adds áddet’s
Digitransit subscription key and forwards the request to Digitransit’s
public APIs (api.digitransit.fi, Helsinki / HSL feed). The
proxy may cache short-lived responses to keep the panel fast. Request logs
on the host are ordinary HTTP logs (time, path, user-agent), not an
analytics product.
Digitransit is operated independently of áddet (Fintraffic / HSL open data). Their processing of routing queries follows their terms for that API.
What HSL stores
Saved routes (names, stops, coordinates you chose), walk and connection limits, and open-at-login are stored in local preferences on your Mac. HSL does not keep a GPS trail.
What HSL does not do
HSL does not create an account, sync routes to iCloud, send advertising identifiers, or include an analytics SDK. There is no HSL cloud for your saved trips. Purchase is through the Mac App Store only.
Permissions
macOS may ask for Location when you use Current location. The system dialog is the grant step. The in-app control is a feature choice, not an “Allow” button. You can change this later in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
Purchases
If you buy HSL on the Mac App Store, Apple processes payment under Apple Media Services terms. HSL itself does not receive your card details.
This website
The HSL marketing site is static. It does not use accounts or a product analytics backend. Your browser may still send normal request logs to the host that serves the pages.
